AND YET THEY CALL IT “GOOD” FRIDAY…

The Jesus story has a scandalous beginning and a tragic end. Nothing about Jesus is wrapped up in a pretty little box. Cold, hard labor brought Him into this world. Cold, hard hatred took Him out.

But the Word became flesh…

The spoken Word. The spoken Word by an infinite God that echoed throughout infinite darkness. God spoke. God became man. God—the great and mighty, Heavenly being—became tiny, weak, vulnerable flesh and blood. A pretty little box? Not even close.

But it’s the ultimate mystery…

A man who loved…but was hated. A man who worked miracles among them…but didn’t save Himself. A man who poured Himself into the lives others, who eventually poured Himself out for the lives (…the very souls) of all.

His teaching was powerful and profound. It made sense, yet it didn’t. It soothed, yet it pierced. Some people clung to the hope of every word He spoke, while others listened intently, lying in wait to crucify.

The Jesus story is not tame. It is not touching. It is unbearable light riven with unthinkable darkness. And ultimately, He was betrayed by one of His own. Yes, cold, hard betrayal by one…of…His…own.

No, nothing about Jesus is wrapped up in a pretty little box. Cold, hard labor brought Him into this world. Cold, hard hatred took Him out.

And yet…they call it “Good” Friday…
