A 3,463 YEAR OLD PEP TALK

pep talk

noun

a vigorous, emotional talk, as to a person or group, intended to arouse enthusiasm, increase determination to succeed, etc.

The pep talk. Whether in the classroom, at home on the couch, in the locker room, or on the job, we’ve given them and received them. We’ve been inspired to increase our determination, production, success, etc. When we feel defeated or overwhelmed, the proverbial pep talk arrives to save the day. They’re certainly not a new invention. They’ve been around for thousands of years.

In the Old Testament, when Moses had died, Joshua took over as leader of the Israelites. As a brand new leader in a difficult situation, Joshua probably needed a pep talk. But it’s not his buddy Caleb giving him one. No, it’s God Himself. Can you imagine? Getting a pep talk from the One who created the heavens and the earth? Here’s what God said to Joshua: (from Joshua 1:1-8):
  1. You must lead these people across the Jordan River
  2. I’m giving you every square inch of the land just like I promised Moses
  3. No one will be able to stand their ground against you
  4. I will be with you
  5. I won’t give up on you
  6. I won’t leave you
  7. Be strong and courageous
  8. Be faithful to the laws–don’t turn away from them
  9. You will be successful
  10. Study God’s Word and do what it says
  11. Be strong and courageous (again!)
  12. Don’t be afraid or discouraged
  13. I am with you every step of the way

Joshua had to have felt confident, empowered, and totally fired up. He then commanded the Israelites (estimated to be over 2 million people), “Pack your bags, because in three days we’re crossing the Jordan River.” And the people rallied around their new leader by responding, “We’ll do whatever you say.” Wow!

A God-given pep talk. Perhaps one of the greatest pep talks ever given….certainly one of the oldest!

How can you be encouraged by God’s pep talk to Joshua? Is there someone you need to encourage today by giving a similar pep talk? (Feel free to leave your thoughts or comments by clicking on the “Leave a comment” link in red below.)
